Public Notice Elkhart County, with funding received from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing the rehabilitation of Elkhart County Bridge No. 102 (Des. No. 1400841) in York Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. The proposed project includes the rehabilitation of Elkhart County Bridge No. 102 over Little Elkhart River and also involves approach work on CR 35 in order to tie the bridge work back into the existing roadway. The current superstructure must be replaced due to the severe deterioration of the adjacent box beam superstructure. The project area to be included in the survey will include the existing structure and approaches on both ends of the bridge and potential areas of right-of-way acquisition to ensure all resources are identified. The length of the project area is 500 feet, extending north from CR 8. The width of the project area is 100 feet wide centered on the centerline of CR 35. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) consists of a buffer of 0.25 mile on all sides of the project area, except for densely wooded areas where the APE was eliminated due to blocked lines of sight toward the project area. This project is a Federal undertaking pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The proposed action does not impact items listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), on behalf of the FHWA, has issued a No Historic Properties Affected finding for the project because no NRHP eligible or listed properties are present within the APE. In accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act, the views of the public are being sought regarding the effect of the proposed project on the historic elements as per 36 CFR 800.2(d), 800.3(e), and 800.6(a)(4).
